Sunday Funday #28

The amount of time I actually have to write anything lately is non-existent these days. The house is slowly coming back together. We had to tear out all our cabinets to remove flooring underneath them. We had to re-plumb our entire downstairs. ALL of the pipes downstairs had to be replaced. There was drywall to patch since there were no access panels to the pipes in the walls. To say that this whole thing has been "quite an ordeal" is an understatement. All of the stuff that was in the cabinets in my kitchen (and my kitchen is pretty big) was in my living room. Everything in my bathroom cabinets was in my bedroom. Everything in Abi's bathroom was in her room. This HAS to be what it feels like to live in a Hoarder house! My skin was crawling.

The good news is that we're on the tail end of things. We just have to put new flooring down at this point.

1000 sq. ft. of flooring.

We're hoping to have it done soon because we've got plans to be away from home so, it'd be nice to have it done sooner rather than later. This whole thing has been so stressful, it's not even funny. I can't wait for it to be over.

I love to read your stories though. So link up!

April Fool's Sunday Funday

Remember how LAST WEEK I said that life was NUTS? OK, I was only setting myself up for an even crazier week. April Fool's Day came a little early at my house. Spring Break was great in that I didn't have to shuttle the RiceCakes to school and we could sleep in... sorta. BUT, the week ended up being INSANE in terms of house stuff.

My kitchen currently looks like this :

How it came to look like this is a LONG story. All you need to know is that right now, things are torn apart. It's going to be like this for at least a week. Our two downstairs bathrooms are in similar shape. Can you say "Hot Mess?"

A WEEK.

They say that "a kitchen is the heart of a home" but, seriously... you have no clue how true that is OR how much time you spend in your kitchen until you can't get in there!

The good news is we're burning all kinds of calories walking all the way around the outside of the house to get snacks. How bad do you want that hummus? Bad enough to walk outside, with a flashlight (cuz we live in the boonies), and back around the outside of the house to actually eat it? Yeah... best diet ever. Not.

I'm thankful for my friend Leslie and her kick ass camper that's parked in my backyard because it saved my sanity (what little of it was left this week anyway!) We're camping in our own yard... the kids think it's quite an adventure.

So... yeah... I didn't write this week. I didn't have much to say that didn't involve LOTS of %($*&^ symbols! But, I DO want to know what's going on in your world so LINK UP for Sunday Funday!

Remember to grab the button from the sidebar and embed it in your post.
AND... turn off your captcha!

Spring Break Sunday Funday

This has been one of the busiest weeks EVER at our house. The RiceCakes were gearing up for Spring Break which meant no one felt like going to school. Isn't that how it always goes? They hardly do anything in class for that whole week but, you're supposed to go anyway! We're WAY into baseball/softball mode which means we spent a LOT of time up at the ballpark. Monday night, we actually had 4 separate practices for the kids AND Dave had a double header to play with HIS softball team! There are a LOT of cleats, bats, and gloves in the back of my Suburban. Never am I MORE glad to have a beast of a vehicle than during ball season! It's a mobile locker room!

We've also going some major work being done to our house which means... LOTS of phone calls, estimates, and time spent with contractors. Hopefully, that junk won't take too much longer. I'm anxious to have the house back in regular working order.

All that being said, I haven't been blogging much. Duh! But I really love bouncing around to your posts when you link up and I'm leaving the link open all week so, come hang out this whole week!

Spring Forward Sunday Funday!

It's that Sunday where most of the country does that stupid Spring Forward clock thing!

Yeah, I know, at some point in history it made sense to do this! But now? I'm not so sure! I think it just jacks with parents of small children. It's a conspiracy to make them even more tired than they already are and late for stuff Sunday morning OR Monday morning, if they didn't get the memo. Word on the street from my people who work in churches is that it's the lowest attendance day of the whole year because people forget to set their clocks and realize they'll be an hour late too late! Who knew?

So... after you go set your clocks (if you forgot!) OR are trying to recover from sleep debt with coffee, apple juice, or whatever you perk yourself up with...

Come link up for Sunday Funday!

Sunday Funday #22

Hooray! It's time for Sunday Funday!
This past week was wild and crazy and hectic! The RiceCakes had a 4 day weekend for... nope, not President's Day... MARDI GRAS! Life on the Gulf Coast means letting the good times roll and not being in school for Mardi Gras Weekend! We went to a parade, danced to the music, caught loads of beads, stuffed animals, and plastic cups (hooray for free junk!)

The RiceCakes at the Mystic Order of Persephone parade!
I also found a rad pair of blinged out Converse so... my shoes matched my beads! (Accessorizing for the win!)

I heart Chucks with pink & silver sequins

The kids went back to school on Wednesday and all said that they definitely should ALWAYS only have 3 days of school per week! Can't argue with that! I know I'd prefer to only get up at 6:45am 3 times a week! ha ha!

The rest of my week was spent doing "Mom stuff" on the phone. Literally, I think I spent 2 straight days on the phone doing house-related stuff. My brain was fried by the end. Kudos to anyone with a paying office job. I HATE being on the phone. Seriously, I hate it. I don't know how people with jobs that require being on the phone, do it. You're amazing.

If you missed it, I also wrote a post for Greta's "Great Expectations" series about how being a military spouse has changed me over at Not Enough Patience, Never Enough Jewelry. Greta was a fabulous host. You should go check out her blog and show her some love.

So yeah.... the week was definitely FULL! What've you been up to? Come link up a post and share!

Sunday Funday #21

Things around here are about to get really busy! Baseball/softball season starts in a couple weeks and so, our family will be spending a LOT of time outside! Even though juggling four different teams can be a challenge sometimes, you can bet that I WON'T really be missing housework. Yeah, laundry might pile up but, when does it NOT?! No one will die if dishes sit in the sink for a few more hours because our family is out in the sunshine cheering for each other. The RiceCakes will remember the fun they had playing ball with their buddies this season AND that their parents were there as often as physically possible. They won't remember that I didn't mop... or that bathrooms weren't sparkling. The season is really only about 12 weeks long... the time we'll spend as a family is more important than the stuff that won't get done during that time. Besides, all that vitamin D from the sun and endorphins from running around make me happy! Happy Mamas don't care if their house is spotless! (at least for a season. Let's not get Hoarder-ish ok?)

What've you got coming up this spring? Is your family going to be doing anything new? Got anything major to juggle while school is wrapping up? Tell me about it and link up for Sunday Funday!!!

Please remember to turn OFF your captcha!

Sunday Funday #19

Time to link up for Sunday Funday! Hooray!

This week has been really busy at my house. SO BUSY that I've hardly had time to write at all! Between Joshy's birthday, teaching chess, music lessons for 3 out of 4 RiceCakes, and having the floor torn out of all of the downstairs of my house... right now is the first chance I've had to be still!

PS... HOW the heck can it possibly be FEBRUARY?! Wasn't it JUST Christmas? What the heck!?!

OK... I wanna know what's going on in your world so... LINK UP!

You know the drill...

No giveaway links ups!
Stick the Sunday Funday button in your post.
Catpcha makes me stabby!
Tweet your links!
Comment... comment... comment!

But MOSTLY, just have fun hopping around to everyone's blogs and getting a glimpse of their world!! I hope that you've had a great week! Thanks for joining me for Sunday Funday!

Sunday Funday #18

Hey all! After having a couple of Sundays away from the link up, I'm back! My gall bladder recovery had a few days of crappiness but, over all went pretty darn well. I'm feeling MUCH better. And good news, I'm now in the running for the "Fewest Original Parts" trophy at my next family reunion this summer so... HOORAY for that! ha ha!

So... without further blabbing... here's the linky!!

Please remember the rules!

#1 TURN YOUR CAPTCHA OFF! (That's "word verification" for newbies!) Getting my gall bladder removed did NOT remove my stabbiness over captcha. It sucks. Making people type a made up word in, for "the honor" of commenting on your posts is LAME! Spam filters WILL catch spammy comments 99% of the time. Don't drive your readers crazy! Turn it off! If you need help with that... ask!!

#2 Grab the Sunday Funday button from the sidebar and insert it in your post! Putting it in a blogroll is nice but, putting it in your actual post sends more of your readers HERE... which can equal more links for us to read and more connections for us to make. It's a win-win for both of us!

#3 Hop on over to the other posts that get linked up and leave comments! Make new friends... or keep up with your faves. Plus, everyone loves feedback!

#4 If you're on Twitter, post that you linked up with me (@MamaRiceCake) and use the #SundayFunday hashtag! If you're not on Twitter... think about creating an account. It's a great way to network with other bloggers and generate more visits to your blog!

#5 Please DON'T link up giveaways! There's nothing wrong with them. We're just trying to connect with people and not stuff for Sunday Funday.

Sunday Funday #17

Yay! It's Sunday Funday time!!!

Come hang out! Pull up a lawn chair, grab a glass of Grammy's World Famous Bourbon Slushie, and link up a post!

There are a few SIMPLE rules:

#1 Turn off your captcha (That's word verification for any newbies!) It sucks. It makes your readers NOT want to leave comments. Turn it off. If you need help, ASK!
Remember, captcha = stabby readers

#2 Please don't link up giveaways. We want to read about YOU! Giveways can be awesome but, they aren't for Sunday Funday! Thanks! MWAH!

#3 Visit the other posts and leave 'em comments! Everyone loves feedback!

#4 Grab the Sunday Funday button from the sidebar and put it in your post!

#5 Tweet your link to #SundayFunday! The more links we get, the more fun we have!

Sunday Funday New Year's Edition

It's the first Sunday of 2012!!!!!
And that means... it's time for a
New Year's Edition of Sunday Funday!

This year, our family went to a good friend's house for a cookie exchange. The Glad company (the one that makes trash bags!) donated 10 cents for EVERY cookie exchanged in the month of December that you registered with them, to Cookies for Kids Cancer. So, last night, while hanging out with buddies and ringing in the 2012, we raised $120 for childhood cancer research! I think that's a pretty cool way to raise money since we would've been together anyway! Plus, we came home with a bunch of really yummy goodies! Win-WIN!

I hope you had a great time with family and/or friends and that you stayed safe!

Now come link up for the first day of 2012!

Remember the rules, they're really simple!

1. Please don't link up giveaways.

2.Please turn off captcha so it's easy to comment on your blog! (Captcha makes your readers stabby!)

3. Please grab the Sunday Funday button from the side bar and put in the post you link up!

4. Please go visit the other links and leave comments! (We all love feedback!)

5. Tweet that you linked up for #SundayFunday with me (@MamaRiceCake) and spread the word!

Sunday Funday #14

Hooray! It's time for another Sunday Funday link up! This December has really hit the ground running! It's been a busy week in Lower Alabama!

Matthew and Abi had a field trip with their gifted education class to the Exploreum in Mobile. There was a special exhibit about Australia that included live kangaroos, wallabys, and dingoes! The kids thought it was awesome. They had baby kangaroos and all kinds of really neat stuff from Australia. They've been studying Australia's history, art, and ecosystems for the last 2 months so, they were extra excited  that they got to see the exhibit!

My car is broken... my transmission died last Thursday. That sucks. Thankfully, my husband is super handy. Thank you Wyo Tech! So, he's fixing it but, we've been a single car family all week. I'm thankful that Dave is working 3rd shift so, I still have a car during the day. This is totally a #firstworldproblem and I know it. I don't have anything to gripe about. It'll get fixed. In the meantime, I just have to plan ahead a little more than I usually do.

I started a new job this week. Actually, it's the first paying gig I've had since I became a Mom a decade ago! ha ha! I'm teaching elementary school level "Intro to Game Theory". Basically, it's teaching kids to use logic based in games. Not video games. But actual board games that involve strategy. We're starting with chess and we'll move on to Othello and other logic games like that. I think games like that are a great way to teach children mathematically principals without making them feel like they're learning math. It's "sneaky math" because they're learning to use probablity and statistics without knowing it. The best part? It's at my children's school and I only work an hour a week. It's the best job ever. Jack comes with me and we play games for an hour and I get paid. The paycheck is lucrative enough that it's totally worth my time. But frankly, it's just fun to teach kids something new and watch them having so much fun.

OK so... you know the deal for the linky!

1. Please insert the Sunday Funday button from the sidebar in your post.
2. Please DON'T link up any giveaways!
3. Please PLEASE turn your captcha off!
4. Please go visit the other linked up posts and leave some comment love!
5. If you're on The Twitter, please tweet that you linked up to #SundayFunday and link your post there too!

Sunday Funday #13

It's been a busy week at my house! It's December and that means lots of decorating and crafting!

The oldest two RiceCakes had a project for school where they had to recreate Australian aboriginal mimih art.

Aren't they awesome artists?

Dave and I hung up our Christmas lights.
The kids decorated the tree.
And I did this to my mantle:

Garland makes me happy!

I had Craft Night with my BFF Alison and her daughter KK and I made this:

It's made with some awesome yarn I found at Michael's!

The holidays are in full swing! What've you been doing this week? Link up a post and tell us all about it!

Here are the rules for #SundayFunday:

1. Grab the button from the sidebar and place it in your post!
2. Don't link up any giveaways please!

Sunday Funday #12

Well, Thanksgiving weekend is wrapping up and it's time for #SundayFunday!

Our family has had a fabulous time together. The kids have been off school for 5 days in a row... which has been awesome! Dave's been off work for 4 days in a row, which NEVER happens! We hung out, watched some football (bummer than our Razorbacks lost to LSU! Rats!), snuggled up and watched a couple holiday movies, and the kids loved watching Punkin Chunkin' on the Discovery Channel. (That's this insanely ridiculous show that only comes on once a year about these crazy people in Delaware who build crazy catapults and see who can throw a pumpkin with it the furthest! Yes, it's nuts! But the kids love it because it's hosted by The Mythbusters and they LOVE those guys!)

My cousin Spencer came to celebrate Thanksgiving with us on Friday with a couple of his Navy buddies before they head off to their next schooling locations. It was really fun to hang out with him and laugh a bunch. The RiceCakes just LOVE him and so, they thought this holiday was extra special since he came over to visit with us.

This year, the food was outright amazing at our house. I'm not just saying that because I was the one doing the cooking either. All four kids, Dave, AND the Navy guys all thought so too. We had a turducken (that's a boneless turkey, stuffed with a boneless duck, stuffed with a boneless chicken) that was stuffed with crawfish etouffe instead of regular stuffing. It was the best one we've ever had. You better believe that I'll be going back to the Cajun Meat Market for another one at Christmas! We also had homemade macaroni & cheese and mashed potatoes with gravy. Abi made our green bean casserole. Dave told her it was the best he's ever had so, she was feeling pretty awesome about that! I also made the Milk Chocolate Pecan Pie I wrote about earlier in the month and Pumpkin Pie. Jack was pretty stoked... he's the kid that loves pie! The kids were all excited because I got a couple bottles of sparkling grape juice for them. I have some wine glasses that were my Grampa John's and I let the kids drink out of them for special occasions so, they were feeling especially fancy this Thanksgiving! Dave found a new moscato that we really love... and we used it to make mimosas! YUM! And when the Navy guys came over, I had a batch of Grammy World Famous Bourbon Slushies!

I know that not everyone was celebrating a holiday this weekend but, I hope that you had some sweet time with your family just the same! Before we get back into the swing of things this week, let's link up and hang out for a few!

You remember how this works right?

1. Link up your post!
2. Grab the button from the sidebar!
3. Turn OFF your captcha! (It makes me all stabby!)
4. Tweet your link and use the #SundayFunday hashtag! (The more links we get... the more fun we have!)
5. Come back and visit all the other posts and comment away!!!

Happy #SundayFunday!

Sunday Funday #11

Well, I dunno about you but, I'm all jacked up on a Skinny Peppermint Mocha (with an extra shot!) from "The Bux"... you know it's BOGO on holiday drinks between 2pm and 5pm today right? YAY!

I hope that you're having a great weekend. This one's been a busy one for our family. We've had LOTS going on and I'm totally stoked that the kids will be home for 5 days in a row next week! Hooray for fewer alarm clock wake ups!!!

My cousin Spencer (OK, technically, he's my third cousin... but explaining exactly how we're related gets complicated... especially since most people don't even KNOW their third cousins!) joined the Navy earlier in the year and has been at A School near us. He's spending Thanksgiving with us this year... and bringing a Navy buddy too! We're thrilled to get to hang out with Spencer and share our home with him since he won't be able to get back to his family for the holiday. Relationships like that are a huge perk to having such a close extended family on my Dad's side of the family tree. Plus, it's good to share the love with our military guys that are far away from home... even if they aren't deployed.

That being said... let's get this #SundayFunday started!

Link up your favorite post from the last week... maybe one that didn't get a ton of comment love. (But please no giveaways!)

Turn off your captcha so that it's EASY for people to comment on your blog. (You don't need it anyway!)

Grab the Sunday Funday button from the side bar and add it to your post!

Then tweet about your link up AND go visit everyone else and be generous with your comments!

Easy peasy!

Have a wonderful time with your family this week! (Even if you're outside of the States and aren't celebrating Thanksgiving this Thursday... November is a great time of the year to be mindful of all we've been blessed with and take time to express that thanks!)

Happy Thanksgiving!
